The Broken Wings is a novel book, written by
Khalil Gibran in the Arabic language in 1912. It is a book from Beruit. It consists
of 5 characters; Gibran, Selma -Farris, Effendi Karamy (Selma's father), Bishop, and Mansoor Bey Ghalib. Actually, this was a poetic love storybook that is
bound to be incomplete. This book also described the social life of a girl of
that time. The writer is saying that when he was 18 years and opened his eyes
with its magical rays.
After that, he was in love with a girl named
Selma. She was the only girl who entered his life and turned his complete life
into happiness and brightness. As he loved, her days and night passed jovial as
if it was a wedding. He said that there must be a Selma in every young man's
life who convert bitterness to happiness. The Writer is saying that he was
deeply in thought and seeking to understand the meaning of life in the book while
love whispered into his ears through Selma's lips, he got the true meaning of
life. When love stepped into his life, his life became lightful and filled with
happiness.
Once Khalil Gibran visited his friend where he
met an old man who knew him but he didn't know him. The old man invited him to
his home because Gibran was the son of his best friend and the old man didn't
want to lose him. When the old man left, Gibran asked his friend who he
had been. His friend replied that he was Farris Effendi Karamy. He was wealthy
and a nobleman.
He had a beautiful daughter Selma who
resembled her father. His friend also told that Selma was in the evil eyes of
Bishop whose wicked hide in his personality. He acted kind but had a demon
inside him. He had a nephew Mansoor Bey who was full of hatefulness and corruption.
In a few clays, Gibran visited Farris Effendi. Farres Kept telling the stories of
his friendship and then he met Selma whose beauty, intelligence, sweetness, and perfect figure were described by the writer through poetries. He also said that his
soul kept talking with Selma's soul. without uttering a single word. When he
was leaving, Farris told him to keep visiting because he was his father and
Selma was his sister.
Once, Farris invited joined them for dinner Gibran and 3 of them had dinner together. After food, the maid informed Farris that a man wanted to meet him. The man was Bishop, Farris was taken to Bishop palace, and Farris told Gibran to wait until he comes. Faris Selma and Gibran went into the garden and kept talking at heart with each other.
Time passed, and Farris came back with a
sorrowful face and tears rolling from his eyes. Selma's father fixed her
marriage with Bishop's evil Nephew, Mansoor Bey Ghalib. When he heard this news
he was about to leave but Farris called him from back and said not to leave
me alone, visit me after Selma leaves.
He lost Selma. He said that he has nothing
left: His happiness changed into sorrow, musical nights into solitude, and beautiful dreams converted into painful memories. He forgets to smile. Selma
was married to Mansoor and a time came when Farris became ill. Gibran went to
inquire about his health. He saw a deadly smile on the old man's face. Farris told
him to bring Selma from the other room. Selma was crying placing a pillow.
He put his hand on her head and console her to come to her father. She
sat by her father's bed and held his hand. In some minutes her father was no
more. After some time, Selma and Gibran Kept meeting in a temple and one day
Selma refused to meet him to See him safe.
Five years of Selma's marriage had passed and Selma was not having any children. She pleaded to God for a child. She was gifted by a boy baby. The boy was given to her mother the celebration started in the palace. The baby was in his mother's arms when he passed away. Selma said my dear baby you came to take and make out of this dark cave. It didn't make any difference to Mansoor as if they both were nothing to him. Gibran attended the funeral when everyone left, he hugged the grave and wept.
