Meta-owned
WhatsApp is finally introducing a long-awaited feature that allows users to
edit their messages within a 15-minute time frame. The announcement was made by
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, in a Facebook post. The edit message option
is currently being rolled out globally and will be available to all users in
the coming weeks.
Zuckerberg expressed his excitement about this new feature, stating, "You cannot edit your WhatsApp messages up to 15 mins after they're sent! 😅" This addition addresses a common demand from WhatsApp's extensive user base, as it provides the ability to correct mistakes or add more context to messages.
To edit a message, users simply need to tap and hold the message they wish to change and select the "Edit" option from the menu within 15 minutes of sending it. It is worth noting that edited messages will be visibly marked as "Edited," informing the recipients that modifications have been made. However, the edit history will not be visible to them. Additionally, WhatsApp emphasizes that all messages and alterations, like personal messages, media files, and calls, are protected by end-to-end encryption.
In March, WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo had previously revealed that the platform was working on implementing the ability to edit messages even after they were sent. According to the beta update for WhatsApp on iOS (version 23.6.0.74), a dedicated alert is in-development to inform users when their edited message has been successfully sent to everyone in a conversation.
