Pakistan’s trade with other countries in the form of exports and imports is about 30 per cent of its GDP. This shows how important is the sector of foreign trade for our economy. The growth and stability of our national income and the standard of living of our people are closely linked with our performance in foreign trade.

Earning more foreign exchange is the basic aim of our economic policies. The production of our farms and factories and other economic activities heavily depend on imported materials and machinery daily goods worth millions are pouring into Pakistan. Consider how our transport, industries and even consumers purchase dependent goods coming from other lands.

For example, imported petroleum keeps the wheel transport running. It generates electricity, moves tractors tube wells, energies our machines and keeps our homes lighted. A break in its imports, even for a few days, can paralyze economic life.

This all highlights the importance of foreign trade for our country. Pakistan has trade relations with most of the countries of the world. A large number of commodities are exported and numerous goods and services are imported each year from around the globe.
