This is a short story which is written by “Guy De Maupassant”

            This story has three main characters “Mr. Loisel who is a clerk at the education ministry office”. The second character is “Mrs. Loisel (Matilda) she is the wife of Mr. Loisel”. And the third character is “Madam Forestier who is the friend of Mrs. Loisel.

            Matilda Loisel is a very beautiful girl. She wants to live a luxurious life, but unfortunately, she has born in a poor family. Being born into a family of clerks, she has to marry a clerk. Then she married Mr. Loisel who is a clerk at the ministry of education office.

            After the marriage, the wife of Mr. Loisel is always thinking about the luxuries of life. She wants to live in a big building, and she wants to be rich. She is not happy with her present life.

            One day a ball will be arranged at the house of ministry. And the husband brings an invitation card that they are invited to that dance party. When the card is given to Mr. Loisel becomes happy because at the dance party only the selected persons are invited. The husband thought that when I give the invitation card to my wife she would be happy. When she gets the card she becomes sad and starts weeping. Husband asks her the reason, and she replies that I do not have any fine clothes, so how can I come to the ball.

            Mr. Loisel has an interest in hunting. He accumulated four hundred Francs to buy a gun. But he gives these four hundred francs to his wife and asks her to buy a nice costume. She becomes happy for a moment but again she becomes sad and starts weeping. Once again she will be asked for her sadness. She says I do not have any jewelry to put on; without the necklace, I will not look beautiful.

            Mr. Loisel suggests to her that she should borrow jewelry from your rich friend madam Forestier. She said it was a good idea and she becomes happy. In the following days, she goes to her rich friend and selects a beautiful necklace.

            On the night of the ball, she wears that costume and necklace, she looks like a queen, and her beauty is appreciated by everyone. Even the ministry wants to dance with her. when they come back home, they judged that the necklace was no more with them. They became worried and tried to search here and there but unfortunately could not find anywhere.

            They arranged an identical necklace in thirty-six thousand francs, from these thirty-six thousand francs eighteen thousand francs they borrowed from another person. Then they returned the necklace of Madam Forestier, but their lives totally changed. It took ten years to repay these eighteen thousand loans. During this time, the beauty of Mrs. Loisel got finished.

            In the end, one day in a garden Matilda meets Madam Forestier and tells her entire story of their lives. From there, Madam Forestier becomes sad when she listens to their story. Madam Forestier says that her necklace was artificial which I gave to you borrow on the night of the ball and said it was no more than five hundred francs.

 

Moral: “We should be satisfied with what we have”
